Jachung Tours & Treks

A Jachung during Tshechu

The mythical bird of Indian origin, the Garuda is known as Jachung by the Bhutanese. A bird with horns and wings of iron, Jachung is praised as the king of all birds in traditional folk songs. Guru Rinpoche, the great Tantric master is believed to have assumed the form of Jachung to subdue malevolent spirits.

In Tantric Buddhist iconography, the Jachung looks down onto the central figure thus giving protection. The Jachung also adorns the four corners of the roof of the Dzongs, protecting it from the negative energies arising from the four directions.

In the Nyingma tradition of Buddhism, the Jachung personifies certain wrathful forms of Guru Rinpoche, and in the Terma or the “Hidden Treasure” tradition, the Jachung is often known as the guardian of treasures.
